I did not work last year and have started freelancing. Do I have to make estimated payments this year?

I did not earn any money last year. I am currently freelancing and averaging approximately $1000 per month for the moment. Do I have to start making estimated payments this year? I read the IRS website, but unfortunately, I didn't completely understand it.
