What happened to Sean in the movie Minority Report?

It's left open. He could be alive or dead. Obviously Spielberg didn't want to make families with missing children feel worse. By keeping it a mystery he gives suffering families some hope that their child's future is still unwritten, and maybe one day they will be reunited.
